    APPLICATIONS OF MACHINE LEARNING AND COMPUTER VISION FOR SMART INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

    Machine Learning and Computer Vision are the two technologies that have innovative applications in diverse fields, including engineering, medicines, agriculture, astronomy, sports, education etc. The idea of enabling machines to make human like decisions is not a recent one. It dates to the early 1900s when analogies were drawn out between neurons in a human brain and capability of a machine to function like humans. However, major advances in the specifics of this theory were not until 1950s when the first experiments were conducted to determine if machines can support artificial intelligence. As computation powers increased, in the form of parallel computing and GPU computing, the time required for training the algorithms decreased significantly. Machine Learning is now used in almost every day to day activities. This research demonstrates the use of machine learning and computer vision for smart infrastructure management. This research’s contribution includes two case studies – a) Occupancy detection using vibration sensors and machine learning and b) Traffic detection, tracking, classification and counting on Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, NH using computer vision and machine learning. Each case study, includes controlled experiments with a verification data set. Both the studies yielded results that validated the approach of using machine learning and computer vision. Both case studies present a scenario where in machine learning is applied to a civil engineering challenge to create a more objective basis for decision-making. This work also includes a summary of the current state-of-the -practice of machine learning in Civil Engineering and the suggested steps to advance its application in civil engineering based on this research in order to use the technology more effectively

    A brief review on recent advancement of tablet coating technology

    A tablet can be defined as a solid unit dosage form. There are several reasons for coating of solid dosage form, the most important reason is to control the release profile & also to control the bioavailability parameters of the APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients). Tablets containing active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) can be coated with thin polymer-based film for various advantages. Generally, horizontal rotating pans are used for coating purposes & coating solution can be spread through the spraying systems over the surface of tablets. Bitter taste masking, odor masking, physical and chemical protection, and also environmental protection are all benefits of the tablet coating. Despite that, Tablet coating also plays an important role in controlling the action site. Sugar-coating, film coating, and enteric coating are some of the conventional tablet coating processes. The primary objective for creating tablet coating technologies is to eliminate the numerous disadvantages of solvent-based coating. Coating solution preferentially applied on the surface of solid dosage forms without the need for any solvent in these novel technologies.     Multiorgan involvement due to cytomegalovirus infection in AIDS

    Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a relatively late complication of AIDS. Like other viruses contributing to co-morbidity of HIV infection, cytomegalovirus has the propensity to cause multiorgan involvement. We report the case of a 34-year-old seropositive man who presented with bilateral lower limb weakness and symptomatic pallor. He was already on antiretroviral drugs for a month prior to presentation. Detailed clinical examination and laboratory investigations revealed cytomegalovirus polyradiculoneuropathy associated with bone marrow dysplasia. Dysplasia of haematopoeitic cell lines occurs in 30% to 70% of HIV infected patients, and is often indistinguishable from myelodysplastic syndrome. However, in our case, the bone marrow picture reverted back to normal with treatment of the CMV infection, pointing to a possible role of CMV as the causative agent of bone marrow dysplasia. Moreover, CMV has been incriminated as a pathogen producing the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome. The onset of the disease in our case one month after initiation of HAART strongly raises the possibility of this being a case of CMV related IRIS. This is the first reported case where IRIS has presented with CMV polyradiculoneuropathy and bone marrow dysplasia. We would like to highlight that in today's era of HIV care, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of multiorgan involvement by CMV, for appropriate management of this disease in the background of AIDS
